OF WANTON CONSUMERISM
6.22.98 Today is yet another Monday. The weekends seem to get shorter and shorter. When Saturday finally rolls around it seems like all I want to do is sleep. It seems like I get more sleep but it's never enough. When will we get three day weekends? Hah! Went to the X Files Premiere on Friday. I was supposed to meet T. at the theatre at 4:30 p.m. As if! Friday traffic on the 405 is the worst. I really have got to get that radio replaced in there because it's so dangerous to have my own thoughts to think all the way home. I was late and pissed off but luckily T. had the foresight to trade in the tickets for a later showing and not go see the movie without me. I would have done some damage to the box office if he had. It turned out to be much nicer this way, anyway. We had dinner at this little place called Baja Fresh. I'm kind of opposed to this Baja Fresh thing which is basically supposed to be healthy, fast mexican food. So, we're talking lots of black beans and funky "wraps." I just don't believe in it. The food is pretty good, though. After dinner we headed over to Tower Records because I decided I needed some music. I haven't bought a CD in ages and since half our collection was stolen by some robber/bastards I felt the calling. I bought a new jazz CD that I had "discovered" over at CD Now on my first visit there. It's Moving Pictures by Ravi Coltrane. Then, T. and I decided it would be a good idea to get Big Bad Voodoo Daddies and the newest Dave Mathews Band. I had picked up a compilation and greatest hits CD of Louis Prima who I have developed a fascination for but then decided to hold off. Once I got over the grandiosity of Tower Records I really enjoyed myself. I don't know how they do it elsewhere but in this one they have books, videos and CDs arranged topically. It was cool to go through the Miles Davis stuff and see that I could buy a boxed set plus a biography plus a video chronicling the history of jazz. I didn't buy any of those but I know if I really wanted to get into jazz I might go back. T. also found a great picture book on the history of Santa Monica. It really is a cool book with great photos and all sorts of historical facts. Definite fodder for the stories. Then we went to Barnes & Noble but managed to stave off several attacks of wanton consumerism. Finally seated in the packed showing of the X-Files T. and I were giddy with excitement. Okay, I was giddy. I kept giving T. these big, toothy grins. I bugged the X-Files fans next to us for insider info and was quite happy until this woman barreled her way into our row knocking our barely-sipped large soda onto the floor spilling every sticky drop. She didn't even notice. Grrr. The movie was highly enjoyable. I have heard detractors out there and I wholeheartedly agree with them. There were elements that I wanted in the movie that weren't there. I wanted to know more. It also took quite awhile for me to get used to the sound of Mulder and Scully in the big theatre. And, I think Scully had a tan which disturbed me through the entire film. The beginning was kind of rocky but I really warmed up to the plot. Basically, it was a really long episode. Fortunately, it was one of Carter's best episodes. I had definitely hoped for more resolution regarding Kryczech (sp?) and Mulder's sister but there was none to be had. Overall, I liked the play between Mulder and Scully and you won't appreciate that at all unless you've seen the show. I loved the Lone Gunmen cameo and Skinner was pretty cool. I hope that they do a Skinner spin-off when the X-Files ends. I don't know if it would be any good but the few episodes that delved into Skinner's life were excellent. Go see it One and a half thumbs up. I have no idea what I did Saturday... oh yeah, nothing. I'm studying up on Shockwave Flash so that I can make some cool streaming images. This will be great for the old resume and great for me. I love using my mind this way. I just hope I can do it. That evening, T. and I went to a housewarming party for a coworker of his. We were the first to arrive but the couple was completely charming so it wouldn't have been a huge loss to have been able to just chat with them all evening. Others showed up and I had several wonderful and interesting conversations. One of these conversations helped T. and I figure out what we're finally going to do for our honeymoon. I'm not gonna tell you, though. Sunday we slept late and made Pillsbury Grands for breakfast. These are by far the best cinnamon rolls to ever explode in the kitchen. T. and I are addicted to them and they are usually a Sunday morning treat right where they belong. We did laundry, made chicken alfredo for dinner, wished our fathers a happy father's day, watched Fox repeats and addressed wedding invitations. We also went to the Beverly Center, which is a new, hip mall we discovered. We bought books for our fathers and a book entitled Bizarro L.A. for ourselves. I bought some shorts at the Gap and a wedding gift for a friend. We spent a lot of money this weekend. Not a good thing, really. Wanton consumerism. æ |
