OF MACALOMANIA

6.18.98

Lots of interesting stuff has happened in the last few days. On Tuesday, T.'s father was in town and we went and hung out with him. He is really and truly a good guy and I am happy that he is going to be my father-in-law. He even gave me a little advice and encouragement in regards to my futile job search. It was nice to hear some of those words. It was also nice that he was trying to sell us on moving closer to family. My parents have tried to encourage the same for their neck of the woods. I am pleased that both sets of parents like us enough to want us closer to home.

The three of us went down to the Third Street Promenade and walked around looking for a decent eatery. We first stopped into Gotham Hall which was hawking appetizers on the sidewalk. Whoever designed Gotham Hall did a good job. As you might expect from the name it is done in the style of the Batman comics. It's huge with a decent-looking bar, many purple pool tables and a stunning dance room done in something of a baroque style and done well. I have no idea how the food was since their dining room was too full to seat us. I will definitely be coming back to check out their night life.

We ambled on and came across Lago. It was the best decision I've been a part of in weeks. Lovely atmosphere in a bright, airy room with open grill and chefs with hats. I had the Penne al Grappa and was served a large portion that was just delicious. T. moaned over his Gnocchi and his father seemed to enjoy his meal as well. So, if you're in the mood for some good Italian cuisine then check it out. Here's the review from Zagat's (why do I love Zagat's so much?):

Locanda del Lago
231 Arizona Ave., Santa Monica, 310-451-3525
Food 18, Decor 18, Service 18, Cost $27

Specializing in the dishes of Northern Italy's Lake District, this "reliable trattoria" with a "nice feeling" and "good service" is "convenient" and "above average for the Promenade"; it's sometimes "inventive", usually "pretty decent" or, as one open-eyed fan sees it, "the best cliche in town."

Yesterday had a bit of excitement with a few earthquakes. There was a 3.1 followed a few seconds later by a 3.9 two miles away from where I work in "the valley." It did a little bit more rumbling than I would like. Everybody in the building was a little excited by this and, I heard, that a handful of first floor people actually bolted out the door. I was in the graphics room tweaking the website and they have a big, honkin' monitor in there. This is the second earthquake I have experienced staring at the big, honkin' monitor and I have a fear that it's just going to jump up and land on me.

I'm not a big fan of the earthquakes. As long as there's no damage I'm not really scared of them but the thought that below the earth's surface things are shifting around is a little frightening. I wonder what the first people to feel an earthquake out here thought about it. Apparently, they didn't think "Let's not build a large, sprawling city right here on this shifty land."

Last night I went to a Webgrrls gathering which was quite a bit of fun. It was just a few of us there to hang out and talk. I really didn't know what to expect. Since I don't check the calendar of events on the site with any regularity I got the email just the day before. The president of Webgrrls Japan was coming into town and we could meet her if we liked. Including myself there were five of us and we met at Cafe 50s on Santa Monica Blvd.

I was late but was only the second person to arrive. I sat and chatted with one of the members who I know to be primary in the structure. She just published an Office 98 Bible for Macs. It's one of these huge tomes. I always wondered who wrote those things. I remember her being referred to as a "Mac-evangelist" at our last meeting. As it turned out I was surrounded by ardent Mac users that evening which can be frightening. Why are Mac users sometimes so fanatical? I've used both platforms and I like them both. But, every point I would bring up about PCs was immediately met with the reason why Macs are better. At no point did I ever assert one way or another superiority of either machines, but yet....

The word for today is: "Macalomania."

So, aside from that little fact, the gathering was entirely enjoyable. We picked our guest's brain about conditions in Japan in reference to women in the business sector. We talked about cultural differences in many different countries and also about the change in feminists/feminism over the years. It was just so nice to use my brain and talk to people with intelligent things to say. Lately, the only place I do that is online, which is nice but not as entirely satisfying. I'm looking forward to the next meeting and learning more about this diverse (in age, experience and background) group of women.

I'm almost done with The God of Small Things. And the ending is promising to be gut-wrenching and painful. I will have to read this book again.

So, it's been an interesting couple of days even if this entry wasn't. :-)
