The Geranium Journey into the Interior In a Dark Time The Waking I Knew a Woman The Reckoning Night Journey My Papa's Waltz Elegy for Jane The Far Field
This might be one of Roethke's most famous poems. If you're a fan of his work it's probably because of this piece. In a Dark Time really shows, in my opinion, Roethke's amazing ability to create a mood and paint a picture with words. It has a distinct rhythm and begs to be read out loud.

In a Dark Time
In a dark time, the eye begins to see,
I meet my shadow in the deepening shade; I hear my echo in the echoing wood-- A lord of nature weeping to a tree, I live between the heron and the wren, Beasts of the hill and serpents of the den.
What's madness but nobility of soul
A steady storm of correspondences!
Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire. |
