Being unemployed. Not having heard yet about the contract job. Feeling sort of ineffectual. And, frankly, longing for snow. We hopped in the car. Took the cat, too. One long day later and we are in Montana with my parents and little brother. There are three black cats of varying widths and two dogs. One dog is new. One dog is old. The new dog makes the old dog look all proper and restrained. In an hour or so my older brother arrives and this will be the first time this family has been in one place since the fall of 1998. In the fall of 1998, I got married.

So far, we are having a lovely time and I have no idea when we'll be leaving.

All I can say here at the end of the year is that I have some wonderful friends. I am deeply in love. And, when everything else is out of whack, as long as you have some people ready to give you an unconditional hug then things aren't so bad.

I can't say that I'm looking forward to 2002. It's not that I am without hope -- it's that I'm humbled. I can say with assuredness that 2001 will not be missed. Who would disagree?

Last night we had dinner with friends, watched bad teevee, wandered the streets a bit watching fire-crackers, visited neighbors near midnight and were entertained by an eleven-year-old running the streets going "Whoo! Hoo!" -- testing out her impact on the world. Opened an old bottle of Champagne as per tradition and toasted, "Good riddance."
