I N T H E N I G H T K I T C H E N
The September eleventh media machine is ramping up. You can hear the wheels spinning, creating a background, rapidly-rising whine. It makes me a little nauseous but not as woozy and off-balance as thinking about the
events still does.
For me, I'll forgo all media on the eleventh. I just can't bear a rehash or soundbites or celebrity overtures of sadness or whatever. I hear that Hallmark and Congress are calling that day Patriot's Day. That doesn't make any sense. The hijackers were patriots, weren't they?
I have a project I'm going to work on that day. Maybe I'll make real progress on it. It's one of those things that has the potential to
make a difference. I mean, I don't think that my contribution will make that difference but my participation feels like it means something. I mean, I can pick up a grain of sand and throw it into the abyss or I can do nothing.
