The Bradys Get It On
Title: Hot Brady on Brady ActionSubtext: Pop culture and sex and, uh, the Bradys and... dude.Actually: a young college girl's attempt to appear subversiveI'm going through a bunch of my old creative endeavors and pulling out stuff to include in my portfolio for admissions to graduate school. Out of the hundreds of photographs, there is one series that I am most proud of and a half-dozen black and white photos that I'll include. But, by and large there's a bunch of crap.
To be fair, much of it was learning and exploring and I see the lessons learned in them. However, to me, much of the work is disappointing.
This polaroid, however, is hilarious. Whenever I managed to scheme my way into the photo classes in the art school, I was suddenly thrown in with
art students who were doing wacky things like photographing their vaginas, making art out of their own hair, snapping instant pictures of their friends in bondage gear and making xerox copies of photos of signage.
My approach, which was still dedicated to photojournalism, was oh-so-boring to most of them. As much as I longed to be all cool and subversive and
edgy my heart was in telling the story or simply transporting the viewer or just capturing what was out there in an interesting way.
In my color photo class we started out with Polaroids. That was pretty fun. I'd like to get more Polaroid cameras to play with as mine doesn't get the super-saturated colors that can make those images so great. Anyway, this was part of an assignment where I paired this image, with an image of a window with blinds drawn and an image of a dirty bathtub.
I just threw them together and pretended there was a grand message about sexuality and pop-culture and hidden taboos. The class seemed to love it.
So, I had to laugh when I pulled this one out. Regardless of the intent or lack thereof, it's kind of fun. I like the colors and the image. You get some strange stuff when you photograph off of the TV. I might frame it and put it somewhere because I just like it. However, it's such a cheap shot. It's such an
art school cheap shot.
