Dread We're going on an 8.5 mile hike today. My right knee has been killing me all week. I did finally go to the doctor and she recommended a specific exercise and Ibuprofen. So, basically, I have to live with it. It's enough to send me to tears when I think about it. My goal today is to take it slow. It's supposed to be warm in The Gorge today so that'll be good. I'm bringing my camera -- more photos for you! Okay, enough of this scattered entry.... 3.23.2001

You Ain't Got No Alibi... Against my better judgement, I went to the Alibi last night for karaoke with T. and some of his coworkers. I didn't want to go because I knew I would smoke and I did. I didn't smoke as much as I normally would but I still feel icky today because of it. His coworkers were nice, chatty people and I had fun hanging out with T. but the general crowd wasn't as fun as last time. There was some large rag-tag group of people that hogged up most of the tables in the karaoke area. It was rumored that they were part of a Vespa club which would explain their dissimilarity. It's kind of interesting when groups form out of a single common interest -- it doesn't always work. However, I think while they were there they also discovered another commonality -- not a damn one of them could sing a note. They were so fucking bad. And, by 11 o'clock, when three of them caterwauled in a row, I told T. that we had to leave. Thankfully, he was up next and then one of his coworkers and they were both entertaining and it ended on a good note. But, da-amn. So bad. + + + What is Amanda doing today? Well, Amanda is working her ass off on some logos. I haven't used Illustrator in several months and I have version 7 here at home and the last one I worked on with some regularity was version 8. So, right now I'm in the hell that is software (specifically points and paths and curves) and the hell that is logo design. I think the hell that is logo design is worse then the hell that is web design. Because, you know, a logo is huge. A logo is identity, it's what will get stamped on every product, every memorandum, every... I'm really making a too big a deal about this, aren't I? The truth is, I need to work up one more logo and then I'll have three and that's a good enough start to pitch. I'll go from there with their feedback. That's sensible, right? Clearly I need more coffee. 3.21.2001

Roots T. sent me this today from the World Wildlife Fund website: "The polar bear's coat, covering it completely except for the nose and foot pads, is superbly adapted to Arctic environments. Along with a thick layer of body fat, the water-repellent coat insulates the bear from cold air and water. It also serves as camouflage; in fact, polar bears can sometimes pass as snow drifts. The fur is 95 percent efficient in converting ultra-violet sun rays into usable heat. Its transparent hairs have a hollow inner core which scatters ultra-violet light by some unknown mechanism, converting it into heat when it reaches the bear's black skin. Surprisingly, the fur has no white pigment; it is the reflection of the sun which causes the fur to appear white." Who knew? What I want to know is, does a Polar Bear turn black as the sun goes down? 3.19.2001

Mirror Project Are you familiar with the "Friends of Jezebel's Mirror"? Also known as the "Mirror Project"? I contributed! This photo is the day before leaving for Austin. It's still morning and I haven't showered. That t-shirt is one of the rattiest, softest things I own and I took all the pictures from angles that didn't show the holes in it. (Have patience as the page loads, it often shows a different picture first.) |
