City Sadness

Sad day in Portland. Yesterday, my former-former employer layed off six people. A few of these were friends. One of them, Eric, was a good friend and a partner in crime when I was there. Last night, I went out with a huge number of the people still working there and Eric and we drank and smoked and bitched and laughed. It just sucks.

I gave Mike a ride home and then headed home myself, crossing the Burnside bridge and taking a long look at this really pretty city, all lit up and inviting. It's a good city. It's easy to live here. It's fun. However, last night I was feeling a little bit bitter about it all.

I think a lot of people feel that us dot.commies deserve what we get. There's this broad misconception that everyone in the web industry is slaving away at a startup praying for stock options. Yes, there are those. However, everyone I know in this industry is pretty much just working in a job. It's a cool job. It's very fun. We are lucky to get to work in this wave of creativity and innovation. But, most of us are just happy to be working. It's just a job. A job we love. A career that feels exciting.

These layoffs are so disappointing. Even more disappointing as Eric feels he has to jump on the next company that will have him. I wish he could wait and feel things out a bit. He's so talented. I want him to freelance. He could do it.

So disappointing.
