T. and I went to a Pearl Jam concert last night. It was part of his birthday present from me. He used to be a big fan and I liked their music, too. I tried to keep it a surprise but that didn't work out too well. (No guessing next year!)
Our seats were so high up that we got a special shout-out from Eddie, throwing the lights up at us and asking, "Who the hell is up there?!"
Regardless, it was fun. The crowd-watching was great. There were four guys in our row, all fresh-faced and young and polite. They couldn't have been older than 17 and there were being very, very cool... until the lights went down. One of them went positively giddy and jumping around in his seat. They were very excited.
In front of us were a small group of girls trying their hardest to look drop-dead hot, hot, hot. One of them was wearing almost nothing and I had to giggle when I saw her fake-singing along. The other two knew all the words and wore a few more clothes.
It amazed me all the young people there. I haven't really listened to or "followed" Pearl Jam since 1994 at least. They played a lot of their older songs and the whole crowd sang along. They were good. I was impressed.
A couple people got busted in our section for exhaling massive amounts of pot smoke. I couldn't believe that they got it in there and that this one guy was completely, full-out roasting a pipe and thought he wouldn't get caught. I haven't been to a lot of concerts and never a civilized one in a ridiculously big venue such as this one (Rose Garden) but it shocked me in this setting. There were security guards and crowd monitors
everywhere. It was all clean and neat and tidy. The concerts I've been to were usually so thick with pot and smoke and heat and sweat that you'd have to belly-crawl along the floor to get relief. However, those concerts were not assigned seating. You'd push and shove your way right to the stage, dodging burning embers and sharp points. The pot at the Garden just seemed so out of place. Kind of lame.
I'm just an old fuddy-duddy.
