 Lutherans
8.16.98
Sunday, 11 p.m.

I finally got into Bozeman at close to ten o'clock. Today I was up early to go to church with my parents and my little brother. We're Lutheran.

Now the thing about Lutherans is that we're a awfully layed-back sort of people. I shouldn't say "we" as I haven't been much of a churchgoer since I left home. I felt I needed to find my own way but somehow I feel more lost. Whether this is due to missing regimented Sunday meditiation or not I don't know. When I say regimented I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way. Sometimes you need regimentation to give you the things you need that you might otherwise skip if left to your own devices. "Quiet time" is as good for adults as it is for kids.

Anyway, I don't know what I think of my parent's new church. Everytime I'm here I go which means I've gone approximately 5 times. Each time it seems a little stranger. It's hard to pin down exactly what it is. I like my church experience to be quiet and respectful with a moving sermon and a snack, I mean, communion. I don't want to hug my neighbor and I don't care to sing songs "in the round." I definitely don't care to "act out" the Lord's Prayer in the manner that the sunday school kids are doing it as a memory device. I'm surprised that we didn't do the hokey-pokey. Maybe I just caught church on an "off" day.

Being home reminds me how much I enjoy my freedom.

Today, my Aunt threw me a bridal shower which consisted mostly of my older relatives (all older than me, actually) and some friends of the family. It was nice -- a lot more special than I expected. I'm not used to all this attention and it's hard to keep myself from running off to hide in the corner. I should savor it as I'm not likely to get this attention ever again. Maybe this is why I'm having a hard time getting a job. I don't always mind the spotlight but I like it on my own terms -- not marketing terms.

Tonight I was able to check my email and I sent a note to somebody looking for design interns. They claimed to offer compensation so I might as well see what it's all about. If it's experience the world wants then that's what they'll get.

I caught up on a few journals and perused some other stuff. My mom just got a new computer with Windows 98. I'm not a programmer or a hack so I have no reviews. The computer worked. I got online. Life is good. My mom's also now has a 56k line which was pretty sweet. Last time I was here she had a 14.4 modem with IE 2.0 -- ick. The web ain't pretty on that.

    In weather news...

Bozeman is gorgeous. You can't beat the sky here -- it's amazing. The most perfect shade of blue and the most dramatic clouds. It's so quiet. It's so nice to be away from the sirens and squall and heat of L.A. It's nice to feel safe.
