FEATURED LINK

The idea of the featured link is that it will have some sort of connection to L.A. or Southern California life. If you come across something that you think I would like please send it to me. Each link will open a new browser window.

[ 2.28.99 ] The first featured link of the New Year (yes, I've been remiss) is one that's been in my bookmarks file for months and months. It's a real L.A. fan page in which the author explores L.A. at night. The best part of this site is the section on swing dancing. The author was even so kind to send me some of her favorite hot spots for the swing set. It's a cute site and I love the idea of studying L.A.'s dark side. In the mood? Explore the

Nocturne

[ 12.24.98 ] I suppose this is like wrapping up something that's been sitting on the mantle and saying "here -- Merry Christmas" since I've already linked to her a billion times in the stories. But, if you haven't visited her you should do it now. Right now. I mean it. Her writing is hilarious and insightful and her site is as colorful as she is. She lives in Long Beach which is just south of Los Angeles. Go now. Immerse yourself in

Shelleyness

[ 11.27.98 ] I've talked quite a bit about T. and I taking dance classes at The Derby. It's a great little club — very swank and friendly. There's a photo of the bar area on their site and, yes, it does look that cool. Let's go, Daddie-o, to

The Derby

[ 10.31.98 ] What could be more apropo at this time of year than a site about spooks and ghoulies and bumps in the night? I give you

Hollywood Hauntings

[ 9.24.98 ] As soon as I read this quote I knew I had to share:

"The first taste of LA water that I had in the hotel actually left me looking around for some water to get the water taste out of my mouth."
This is actually another Disneyland site but written by four Seattle natives who spent a few days (weeks? months?) gambolling through Mickey's Meadows. If you plan on visiting the "happiest place on earth" anytime soon I suggest that you spend some time with the
Gen-X Guide to Disneyland

[ 8.11.98 ] On my quest to find more stuff about Los Angeles I went to Amazon. I typed Los Angeles, CA. Lots of books came up but only one caught my eye.

"Chandler writes like a slumming angel and invests the sun-blinded streets of Los Angeles with a romantic presence," said Ross Macdonald. (in Amazon.com).
In another quest to find out more about this author of noir mysteries, I turned up a lovely little page. It's layout is nice, it contains some awesome black and white photos of old L.A. and other stuff that looks quite promising. I give you
Raymond Chandler

[ 7.7.98 ] No list of links about California would be complete without a link to Disney. The Disney site has been around forever but there's no need in visiting it because you know exactly what it's going to be like. I think the Disney mailing list was the first list I ever signed up for on the Internet and it was the first list I ever unsubscribed from. This site, however, is entirely different. This person loves Disneyland and loves nostalgia. Don't miss the entry for the "Carousel of Progress" in

Yesterland

[ 6.14.98 ] This is the ultimate in voyeurism and if you have the Real Audio plug-in (and speakers) you can play too. Want the skinny on crime going on in Los Angeles (or Dallas or New York City)? Then tune in any time of the week, any time of the day and listen to the

Police-Scanner

[ 5.26.98 ] Now, I don't want you running off and leaving me permanently but I thought you might like this journal. Diane Patterson has just finished USC's screenwriting school and is off to find fame and fortune among the hills of Hollywood. She been down here for a few years now but I found her September '96 stuff, when she was new to the area, hilarious and could really identify with it. My favorite part is an allusion to the "cabal of killers" which follow her around on the highway. I feel like that. It's not the writing that she minds, what she can't stand is

The Paperwork
Update [ 6.2.98 ]: Now that Diane is a big USC graduate she has gone and changed the name of her site to "nobody knows anything."

[ 5.11.98 ] This is a bit of a stretch but I have to put it here while it's still hot. I don't think you have to love this show to get the humor in the page but it might help. Actually, it would be even better if you hated the show. My favorite quote paraphrased: "Donna's skirt is so tight it's giving her camel-toe." Check out a few choice episodes from Danny Drennan's

90210 Weekly Wrapup

[ 4.19.98 ] Call me morbid but I would have linked to this page for the title alone. Need a gift for the person who has everything? Go to the

L.A. County Coroner's Office Gift Shop

[ 4.10.98 ] This site is one of the most pleasing and creative that I have come across in a long time and I haven't even finished going through it yet. Proof positive that it is content which makes a good web site. It is one man's memories of growing up in Burbank, California, in the 70s. A really fun site that I'm sure you will get into. It's called
