OF SAILING THE OCEAN BLUE

10.4.98

I've got a new attitude on things. I'm tired of struggling to find the job and feeling all down on myself because I'm not an instant multi-billionaire and infinitely happy right out of college. O wa ta foo l i am.

I mean, really. It's just ridiculous. What am I doing here? Is this some Gen-X thing I'm going through? Whatever it is — it sucks.

Young lady, you need an attitude adjustment.

So, I'm going to seek out an "interesting" job. Something that will give me things to write about and allow me to meet new people. I want to be able to look back on my experiences here and laugh and have tales to tell.

Guess what I did today? I went sailing.

It was sooo much fun. A group of women got together from my webgrrls mailing list and we got a sailing lesson. One of the women owned a boat and her husband had given lessons before. Five of us got to tag along and get a free ride.

I've been on a boat before but never a sailboat and never where I got to help with the sails and steering. It was such an experience. I did get just a little woozy but I just kept quiet and gazed at the shoreline.

The day couldn't have been more beautiful. Clear skies, moderate temperatures and the perfect breeze. And, I got to talk web biz with other people who happen to be struggling like I am. It was so nice to just get to hang out and talk tech and talk graphics without having to preface the conversation with a complete tutorial and overview.

Our helmsman, Richard, was a great tutor and has a salty, skipper air about him — white moustache and very tanned. I was the first at the wheel after we got out of the marina and he was very patient as I pitched us this way and that. I took us up to 7 knots with just the sails which I guess is pretty fast. It's almost exactly 7 miles an hour but it feels pretty swift when you're out there in the open air. I can still feel the rocking of the ocean.

Got me a nice little sunburn, too. This morning I could have entered a contest for the Whitest Person in Southern California and won.

In a follow-up to the last entry I would like to tell you that T. had gone to the gym after work. He claims that he told me and either I didn't hear him or I forgot. Hmmm... plausible deniability?
